With the Scania drivetrain being well established in the fleet for use off road, this will be a true test of the new gearbox and drivetrain on how it will cope in the stress away from the motorway.

By using a manual gearbox, this will allow the driver to utilize all available torque in the challenging off road environment this truck will spend its days in. The new gearbox featured in this model is the all new ZF Traxon box in a 16 speed manual setup. Couple this with an 8% increase in fuel efficiency and the Dutch giant should be onto a winner. By staying out of the way of the race for power between Scania and Volvo, DAF have been able to focus their efforts on achieving maximum pulling power which is reflected by the engines ability to produce over 2,500 NM of torque! As well as this, it's a 20hp gain over the previous generation of MX engine and the most powerful DAF since the XF95. Although this won't be a showstopper in terms of power in the Thompson's fleet (This being held by a Scania R730) it should definitely make up for this in pulling power which, especially in the timber haulage industry, is where it really matters. This CF features the newly reworked 12.9 liter MX-13 engine rated with the highest power output available from DAF, 530hp. The new generation of MX engines and all new gearbox. Why fix what isn't broken? With many people on the fence over the new modern designs DAF's new face lift and old cab retains the classic look but still moves with the times allowing them to still have the market leading long haul cab across both the CF and XF models.

Naturally, this cab looks virtually identical to that of the first generation of CF's from 2004 or older making the basic cab itself over 10 years old! with many other manufacturers opting for super modern designs for their new trucks- namely the new Scania S series and Volvo FH- DAF have stuck with their roots and perfected what is possibly the perfect form of truck on the road.
The world is under no illusion that the DAF cab is old. Even though this isn't a flagship XF model, this space cab gives the CF just as much room as a standard XF and is definitely enough to compete with the current fleet of highline Scanias. The truck is speced with the space cab option giving it ample space for a week (or more) out on the road. The lengthy spec sheet is also finished off with the top interior option featuring a wooden effect dashboard, leather stitched steering wheel and leather and suede air ride seats offering the ultimate level of driver comfort. It also features a Space cab (the highest option on the CF) sat on top of DAFs all new MX series engine rated for 530 horsepower, as well as the all new ZF Traxon gearbox in a 16 speed manual guise. Spec wise the truck is sitting as a 6x4/2 rear tag axle chassis with a large overhang at the rear for the timber crane and trailer attachment for the tri-axle draw bar trailer soon to arrive for it. Of course, who could forget the Alcoa alloy wheels all round? Just the right amount of customization from top to bottom with high bars from Kelsa in between the cab spot lights and the DAF mud flaps sat below the front bumper. Thompson's dark glossy blue, red and white livery brought out the lines of the DAF cab perfectly and everything complemented everything perfectly. I switched the lights on and got my first impressions of this new machine. Understandable thanks to the wind and rain outside.
The truck itself was being kept in the workshop upon my arrival.
